Behavioral Health: Inpatient Services
Millions of Americans live with some form of mental illness. In the past decade, medical science has made huge strides in diagnosing and treating all forms of mental illness, providing hope to many. The Inpatient Behavioral Health unit on 4 Main consists of an 18 bed voluntary unit and a 19 bed involuntary (short term care facility, STCF) unit. The unit serves adults suffering from acute episodes of major psychiatric disorders that are so severe that they require a more restrictive environment than that available in the community.
Major conditions/most frequent diagnoses treated:
The patients admitted to the Inpatient Behavioral Health unit presents with mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder, depression, substance induced mood disorder, personality disorders, and substance abuse.
Scope and complexity of care needs:
The scope and complexity of care needs for patients receiving care on the Inpatient Behavioral Health unit include multiple conditions such as psychiatric, medical, and substance abuse. The patients come from many settings such as private homes, boarding homes, group homes, and homeless conditions. In addition to nursing care services provided, physical therapy and respiratory therapy are provided to the patients based upon assessment of individualized patient needs and plan of care.
Typical Services, Treatments, Procedures, Activities Performed:
The services, treatments, procedures, and activities provided to the patients on the Inpatient Behavioral Health unit include, but are not limited to: psychiatric evaluation, nursing assessment, psychosocial assessment, activity therapy, group counseling, medication management (monitoring, review, and education), Mental Illness Chemical Addiction (MICA) groups, recreation therapy, family counseling, and discharge planning. Various staffs are involved in the preparation of patient’s discharge to home, shelters, boarding homes, group homes, correctional facilities, and county or state hospitals. Upon discharge, patients are provided referrals for aftercare to outpatient and partial hospitalization services, intensive outpatient (IOP) services, and Program for Assertive Community Treatment (PACT). Patients may also be referred to clinical case management such as Intensive Case Management Services (ICMS) or Project for Assistance in Transitional from Homelessness (PATH).
