What Is SPRAVATO®?

SPRAVATO® is a ketamine-based prescription nasal spray that is taken along with an oral antidepressant. It works by increasing glutamate, a naturally occurring chemical in the brain that helps transmit messages between brain cells. When glutamate is increased, communication between brain cells is improved, which positively affects mood.

SPRAVATO® works quickly, so people with depression can feel better within hours. This is so important, because other depression treatments can often take a long time to work, may not provide enough relief, or may not provide relief at all.

Who Should Use SPRAVATO®?

Typically, you are a good candidate for SPRAVATO® if:

You have hard-to-treat depression. This means you have been prescribed at least 2 different antidepressants, but have not felt any significant improvement.

You have major depressive disorder with suicidal thoughts.

If SPRAVATO® is right for you, it will be prescribed along with your oral antidepressant medication.

How Is SPRAVATO® Administered?

Because SPRAVATO® is a psychedelic treatment medication, it must be taken on an outpatient basis at CareWell Health. Our program is a certified Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) program, and our team is specially trained to monitor the use of SPRAVATO®.

1

Private Room

In a private room, under the instruction of a skilled and caring clinician, you will administer the nasal spray to yourself.

2

3 Sprays

SPRAVATO® treatment consists of 3 sprays, spaced 5 minutes apart. You will be here for about 2 hours.

3

Monitoring

Our team will make sure you are properly cared for, including monitoring you for any side effects.

Your Treatment Schedule

SPRAVATO® follows a phased treatment plan designed to help you achieve the best possible results.

Weeks 1 - 4

Week 9+

Maintenance

Every 1 to 2 weeks, gradually adjusting frequency based on your continued progress.

Important: Each session takes approximately 2 hours. You will need to arrange transportation home, as you cannot drive for the rest of the day following treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to common questions about SPRAVATO® treatment.

SPRAVATO® (esketamine) is the S-enantiomer of ketamine and is the only FDA-approved ketamine-based treatment for depression. Unlike IV ketamine, SPRAVATO® is administered as a nasal spray, has undergone rigorous clinical trials, and is covered by most major insurance plans. It is available only through a certified REMS program to ensure safe use.
Many patients begin to notice improvement within hours to days of their first treatment, which is significantly faster than traditional antidepressants that can take weeks or months. However, individual results vary, and the full treatment schedule is important for sustained improvement.
SPRAVATO® is not considered addictive when used as directed in a clinical setting. It is a controlled substance and can only be administered in a certified healthcare facility under medical supervision. The medication cannot be taken home, and each dose is closely monitored by your care team.
No. You should not drive, operate heavy machinery, or engage in activities that require full alertness until after a good night's sleep following treatment. Please arrange for a friend, family member, or ride service to take you home after your appointment.
Plan for approximately 2 hours per session. This includes the nasal spray administration (3 sprays, 5 minutes apart), the required monitoring period, and a final check by your clinician before you are cleared to leave.
